Late September Skyline Bridge Closure Anticipated

San Mateo County plans to close Skyline Bridge at the end of September, 2010 (the bridge atop Lower Crystal Springs Dam on Skyline Blvd. between Crystal Springs Rd. and Bunker Hill Dr.). We have several more weeks to enjoy this popular bicycle route before the County begins the Skyline Bridge Replacement Project. Vista Parking area, adjacent to the bridge and the southern trailhead of Sawyer Camp Trail, will also close at the end of September.

  1. After seven years, it's still closed. What is the holdup?

  2. The construction in the Skyline Bridge area has taken the years that it has because there have been four different projects for that area. The first two by the SFPUC—the Lower Crystal Springs Dam Improvement Project followed by several essential improvements to nearby pipelines and pump stations—were completed by the end of 2014.

Before we began the dam & pipeline/pump station projects, San Mateo County demolished its existing bridge on top of the dam, which had been deemed seismically unsafe and in need of replacement. The County of San Mateo Department of Public Works Bridge Replacement project is currently in progress and scheduled for final completion in early 2018.

It will be followed by one more several-month-long project by PG&E—the installation of high-voltage cables to replace existing overhead transmission towers.

The bridge is currently expected to reopen for public use in fall 2018.
